 霍光论

古之人,惟汉武帝号知人。盖其平生所用文武将帅、郡国边鄙之臣,左右侍从、阴阳律历博学之士,以至钱谷小吏、治刑狱、使绝域者,莫不获尽其才而各当其处。然犹有所试,其功效著见,天下之所共知而信者。至于霍光,先无尺寸之功,而才气术数,又非有以大过于群臣。而武帝擢之于稠人之中,付以天下后世之事。而霍光又能忘身,一心以辅幼主。处于废立之际,其举措甚闲而不乱。此其故何也?

夫欲有所立于天下,击搏进取以求非常之功者,则必有卓然可见之才,而后可以有望于其成。至于捍社稷、托幼子,此其难者,不在乎才而在乎节,不在乎节而在乎气。天下固有能办其事者矣,然才高而位重,则有侥幸之心,以一时之功,而易万世之患,故曰不在乎才而在乎节。古之人有失之者,司马仲达是也。天下亦有忠义之士,可托以死生之间,而不忍负者矣。然狷介廉洁,不为不义,则轻死而无谋,能杀其身,而不能全其国,故曰不在乎节而在乎气。古之人有失之者,晋荀息是也。夫霍光者,才不足而气节有余,此武帝之所为取也。

书曰:“如有一介臣,断断兮,无他技。其心休休焉,其如有容。人之有技,若己有之。人之彦圣,其心好之,不啻若自其口出,是能容之。以保我子孙黎民。”嗟夫,此霍光之谓欤!使霍光而有他技,则其心安能休休焉容天下之才,而乐天下之彦圣,不忌不克,若自己出哉。

才者,争之端也。夫惟圣人在上,驱天下之人各走其职,而争用其所长。茍以人臣之势,而居于廊庙之上,以捍卫幼冲之君,而以其区区之才,与天下争能,则奸臣小人有以乘其隙而夺其权矣。霍光以匹夫之微而操生杀之柄,威盖人主,而贵震于天下。其所以历事三主而终其身,天下莫与争者,以其无他技,而武帝亦以此取之欤。
