The Book of Sui has a total of 85 volumes, including 5 volumes of the Emperor's Chronicles, 50 volumes of Liebiography, and 30 volumes of Chronicles. The book was co-edited by many people and was written in two stages, and it took 35 years from the beginning of the creation to the completion of the book.

In the fourth year of Tang Wude (621 AD), Linghu Dedi put forward the proposal of repairing the history of the five dynasties such as Liang, Chen, Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, and Sui. The following year, the Tang court ordered Shi Chen to edit it, but after a few years, the book was still not completed. In the third year of Zhenguan (629 AD), the history of the Five Dynasties was reconstructed, and Wei Zheng "always knew its affairs" and edited the Sui book. The authors of the Book of Sui were all well-educated and had a high level of historical revision.

The Book of Sui is the earliest surviving monograph on Sui history, and it is also one of the historical books with a high level of historical revision in the 25th History.

First of all, it has a clear guiding ideology. After taking power, he often talked about the lessons of the fall of the Sui Dynasty, and clearly put forward the view that "using the ancient as a mirror can see the rise and fall". Drawing lessons from history and taking history as a mirror has become the guiding ideology for the revision of Sui history. Secondly, the Sui Book carries forward the fine historiographical tradition of writing straight books, and the characters are less obscure. The editor-in-chief Wei Zhenggang is upright, and the biography he presided over is less crooked, and he is not ashamed of His Holiness. For example, Emperor Wen of Sui's "mean" arbitrariness, "displeasing poetry books", "dark in the avenue", Emperor Yang of Sui's hypocritical appearance, killing his father and adulterous mother, "hoeing flesh and bones, slaughtering loyalty" and other situations are all written truthfully, without concealment.

Thirdly, the Book of Sui preserves a large number of political, economic, scientific, technological and cultural materials. Ten of them record the canonical systems of the Liang, Chen, Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, and Sui dynasties, and some of them can even be traced back to the Han and Wei dynasties.
